Course description

BTEC qualifications are very popular and this BTEC in Public Services offers students the opportunity to gain skills needed for service with a Uniformed Public Service.

This course offers students the chance to study independently as well as providing relevant skills to work in the public service sector.

Course content

The BTEC Certificate in Public Service is a level 3 qualification equivalent to 1 A Level at grades A-C. It is a two year qualification and consists of six internally assessed units. Each unit will be graded pass, merits or distinction. Students have the option to complete a Level 3 Award at the end of the first year.

Unit 1 Government, Policies and the Public Services

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the UK government policies and the democratic election process. They will investigate how policies are developed and how they impact on the public services.

Unit 2 Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services

Students will learn about the different styles of leadership and will be expected to plan and carry out activities. They will be assessed throughout the unit on their teamwork skills.

Unit 3 Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services

The unit is designed to develop an awareness of rights and responsibilities and respect for different religious, ethnic and national groups within UK society.

Unit 4 Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services

The aim of this unit is to learn why the public services have fitness requirement and what they are. Students will be expected to take part in fitness testing and to develop knowledge of fitness programmes. Students will also learn how to provide advice on lifestyle improvement in preparation for entry into the public services.

Unit 5 Outdoor and Adventurous Training

Students will learn about the role of outdoor and adventurous training in the public services by planning and taking part in expeditions. Students will be expected to plan and take part in a one-day and a multi-day expedition of their choice and planning.

Unit 6 The Impact of War, Conflict and Terrorism on the Public Services

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the impact of war and conflict on UK public services and how the public services deal with terrorism both within the UK and on the international scene. Learners will have the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of how international affairs can affect public services in the UK and their operations.
