A Level: Media Studies at JC6: Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre
Media Studies is a course that looks at the media industry and issues within the media texts that we consume. It will give you an insight into how the media is made, how information is given to us and change your perspective on what you accept from the media.
We'll explore questions such as: How are groups of people represented to us in the media? Is it morally right to make a film out of tragic events? How do audiences react to what they see and hear in the media? Can the media be blamed for violence in society? How far does the media control our thoughts about issues in the world today? The course looks at both contemporary and historical media texts, as well as examples from other parts of the world and productions from outside the commercial mainstream.
The course requires that you can be creative and show analytical skills. You need to be able to enjoy studying a range of media texts and be keen to make your own media productions.
Consider Media Studies if:
- You enjoy being creative and showcasing your IT skills.
- You are interested in analysing media texts in detail and from different viewpoints.
- You have the persistence needed to complete high quality coursework tasks as well being willing to revise for exams.
JC6 general entry requirements, including:
- Minimum Grade 4 pass at GCSE English.
A mixture of coursework tasks and end of year examinations.
Media Studies combines well with subject linked courses such as English, IT, Art, Psychology and Sociology, as well as creative subjects like Drama and Dance. The coursework element of Media Studies also means it can suit students who do not work well with a heavy examination load.
It is a good choice for anyone wanting to go on to careers or further studies in media, communications or the creative industries and is a useful general A level for developing skills in visual and written communication, analysis and critical thinking.
