Photography Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

This course is an introduction to creative photography and digital manipulation and you will receive a solid foundation in the technical skills used by industry professionals. 

You will be taught by experienced tutors using industry standard software and equipment.

Course content

The course includes practical, theory and contextual work. You will be encouraged to take a broad view of photography and include elements of a range of Art and Design disciplines. 

The course is sectioned into focused projects aimed to link with business and designed to develop your abilities.

These projects will also involve research, taught classroom and workshop sessions and self-reflection. Feedback will be given at all stages of your development.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at C or above, or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above, preferably in appropriate subject areas.

Level 2 English/literacy is essential. Level 2 Math/numeracy is desirable.

Students without either or both will be encouraged to study them alongside their main programme. appropriate experience.


The most important thing you'll build on the course, aside from your confidence, is your portfolio.

We'll assess you on your ability to produce excellent things to put in it, and you're ability to do it on time and in budget.

We'll also get you to look at how the business works and how you might fit into it, and we'll test you on that too.

Future opportunities

On completion of this course you could progress onto a range of Further or Higher Education programmes of study.

There are also career opportunities across the digital sector around image handling, processing and manipulation.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
