Sport BTEC Level 2 First Certificate at Brockenhurst College

Course description

The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport as an introductory course for learners wanting to study sport in the context of a vocational sector.

The knowledge, understanding and skills learnt in studying a BTEC will aid progression to further study on a Level 3 Sport course and will prepare learners to enter the Sporting workplace in due course.

Typical employment opportunities following this course may include working as a sports coach or as a recreation assistant or sports leader.

Course content

This qualification is taught over 240 guided learning hours. It has core, mandatory and optional specialist units and students will cover a range from the list below:

  • The Sports Performer in Action  
  • Training for Personal Fitness

  • Injury and the Sports Performer  
  • Running a Sports Event  
  • The Sport and Active Leisure Industry  
  • Profiling Sports Performance
You will learn through practical sport experience and theoretical based learning. Groups are taught through classroom lectures, practical sport, group discussions and practical application of sporting theories.

Entry requirements

Normally you should have achieved GCSE grade D in 4 subjects with a least a grade E in English and Mathematics, or a Merit grade in a BTEC Introductory Diploma in an appropriate area and/or related work experience.


The course is assessed through Internal Assessment (Coursework) and External Assessment (Online Exam).

Internally assessed units are assessed through assignments in a variety of formats; these include written reports, posters, practical sports, demonstrations, group tasks, interviews, practical coaching, presentations, work experience, projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments.

Financial information

As a vocational sports course, students will be expected to wear College sports kit. The minimum package can be purchased for approximately £40.

There is a course textbook available which is approximately £25.

As part of the work experience unit, please be aware that if you are required to work in schools, the cost of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is approximately £50 which is a requirement.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Firsts in Sport gives full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport or to progress to other vocational qualifications such as the BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Sport and Sport and Exercise Sciences (subject to meeting the specific entry requirements.)
