Chemistry at Adams' Grammar School

Course description

Chemistry is a very broad subject, encompassing aspects of Mathematics, Physics and Biology and therefore develops and utilizes a wide range of skills and knowledge.

The course followed is the linear Cambridge Pre-U Certificate in Chemistry. An intellectually challenging course, it awards grades roughly equivalent to A Level A* - E but also offers the opportunity for the student to achieve an award above the A* grade.

Course content

You will learn about a unified concept of chemical bonding, the theory explaining why chemical reactions occur, the organic sythesis of drugs such as aspirin and also chemical analysis (both laboratory and instrumental techniques.)

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade B or above.

Assessment

The course is only examined at the end of Year 13; there is no AS award available.

Future opportunities

Progression to a wide range of Higher Education and Degree courses. Chemistry is a challenging subject and as such it is well respected by potential employers and universities.  The chemistry industry is one of Britain's largest and a chemistry degree can lead to many different careers.
