P.E. A/S at Queensbury School

Course description

Why choose A' Level PE?

Sport and fitness is a huge industry...and you can be part of it. If you're keen on sport you can make a healthy living from your passion.

Course content

In the first year there are TWO main study topics.

1.The beneficial effects of a healthy lifestyle which includes subjects such as physiological effects of exercise and how people acquire sports skills.

2.Analyse and evaluate an athlete's performance, and the factors affecting gaining new skills.

How will lessons be taught?

You will have 5 lessons of PE each week. We will try and teach through practical as much as possible although at times it will be necessary to have theory lessons within a formal classroom setting. Practical lessons will be taught by studying a range of activities, and in particular giving students the access to become confident umpires. Many games situations will be set up to give students the chance to become 'whistle blowers' and referee a game effectively. The use of ICT will play a significant role when observing, videoing and analysing performance of individuals in a skills and game situation.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 5 A*-C grades (or equivalent) in your GCSEs, including at least a grade C in the related subject.

To progress onto the second year, you need to gain at least a pass grade from the first year.

In the first year you will have two assessments.

1.Written paper which covers the first topic of the year. This paper accounts for 60% of your marks for the year.

2.Practical exercise where you will be marked as a player and/or coach and/or official, depending on your personal goals and ability. This practical is based on the second topic and accounts for 40%.

Future opportunities

The subjects you learn will be invaluable at a personal level and will help you be better at sport. This A’ level opens up a whole number of career options including sports scientist, physiotherapist, teaching or working for a national governing body.
