Physics A-Level at The Coleshill School

Course description

If you have been successful at GCSE Science and have a high level of analytical ability. You will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles of Physics, gain hands-on practical skills and data analysis skills, appreciate How Science Works and its relevance beyond the laboratory, see how Physics links to other sciences and how the subject underpins important technologies. Physics is a very valuable qualification in a very wide range of career options. It is required for many engineering/scientific fields and is most desirable for courses in dentistry and medicine.

Course content

Unit 1 Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity

AS Level 40% A Level 20%

Unit 2 Mechanics, Materials and Waves

AS Level 40% A Level 20%

Unit 3 Investigative and Practical Skills Assessment in the classroom.

AS Level 20% A Level 10%

Unit 4 Fields and Further Mechanics

A Level 20%

Unit 5 Nuclear and Thermal Physics and one of four optional modules

A Level 20%

Unit 6 Investigative and Practical Skills Assessment in the classroom.

A Level 10%

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to A Level Courses are 5 A* to C grades at GCSE including English and Maths.

Subject Specific

Grade B in GCSE Science is essential, preferably in Physics. A grade B in GCSE Mathematics is essential

Assessment

AS - Two 75 minute examinations for Unit 1 and 2 in June of Year 12 and a practical assessment in the classroom for Unit 3.

A2 - Two 105 minute examinations for Unit 4 and 5 in June of Year 13 and a practical assessment in the classroom for Unit 6.
