IT Level 3 Extended Diploma at Heart of Worcestershire College

Our Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development) is an advanced qualification that mixes theory with practical study to give you the best head start in the industry. In the modern world, almost every job involves the use of computers and IT is essential to the daily running of many businesses and companies. With our diploma, you will be ready to progress to further study or begin work as an IT professional! 

In the first year of the qualification you will achieve a Subsidiary Diploma in IT (worth one A-level). You will need to pass this and the rest of the first year to progress to the second year Extended Diploma in IT qualification (worth three A-levels). At the start of the second year you will choose to specialise in one of three areas; Networking and Systems Support, Software Applications and Multimedia, or Software Development and Gaming. You will also cover Cyber Security.

Our  Diploma will help you to develop a range of skills and techniques in IT from basic knowledge of computer systems to a more advanced understanding of programming, technical support and repair. You will learn how a computer works, how to design and maintain networks, and how companies use information systems to store and use data. You will have the opportunity to design your own software, develop your own website and even program your own computer game! You will also have the chance to improve your employability skills by working on your communication skills and interview techniques.

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSEs grade A-C in relevant subjects (including English and maths) or a relevant Level 2 diploma, such as a Diploma for IT Professionals Level 2. If you are a mature student, then we will also consider your previous IT experience.


You will be assessed through a combination of coursework activities, such as short tests, reports, practical activities and projects.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of your second year and with sufficient grades you can progress to university or to our own HND in Computing and Systems Development or Foundation Degree in Cybersecurity courses.  

ICT is used in every corner of society and the skills you learn during this qualification can be applied to many different jobs in a range of sectors. You may like to consider a career in as an IT Network Support Engineer, a Website Developer, Graphic Designer, CAD Technician, Software Engineer, Programmer, Analyst, IT Trainer or even Computer Games Developer!

      Alliance House is the College’s centre for construction in Redditch. Subjects taught at Alliance House include bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, site carpentry, bench joinery, multi-trade construction operations, plastering, plumbing and painting and decorating. The building is equipped with purpose built working environments allowing you to develop real-life working skills to prepare you for life after college.

      Located on Albert Street, Osprey House is the College’s central office. It is also home to the College’s higher education and professional courses.
