Biology AS A2 at Kettering Buccleuch Academy

Course description

This specification is intended to provide a stimulating and interesting course of study, both for candidates who wish to proceed to higher education and also for those who do not intend to follow this subject further. It has been designed for students who have completed GCSE in double science.

Course content

Subject Content AS Biology

Unit 1 - Biology and disease

Unit 2 - The variety of living organisms

Unit 3 - Investigative and practical skills in AS biology (centre assessed)

Subject content A2 Biology

Unit 4 - Populations and environment

Unit 5 - Control in cells and in organisms

Unit 6 - Investigative and practical skills A2 biology (centre assessed)

Entry requirements

The minimum GCSE grades for entry onto the course is grade CC, but candidates with grade BB or better will probably be more able to cope with the course. The expectation is that candidates will also be competent in Maths and English.

Assessment

AS 20% coursework 2 exam papers

A2 20% coursework 2 exam papers

20% of the course is assessed through centre-marked practical work.

Provides a sound foundation through a study of fundamental biological principles, whilst exploring modern applications of biology.

An opportunity to develop key skills.

Field trip to Boughton House to study ecological principles.

An opportunity to attend a conference focussing on A level biology topics.
