Public Uniformed Services Level 1 at Gateshead College

Course description

This course is your chance to find out about employment in the uniformed services. The course is full time for one year and is suitable for anyone who is considering a career Public Uniformed Services which includes the armed forces, police, fire, prison and paramedic services.

The public services have high standards of behaviour, dress and timekeeping, so this course is for students who are prepared to be responsible and self disciplined and a reference wil be required from a school or previous employer.

Course content

This is a practical course combining a physical fitness programme with class sessions covering theory, research and group activities.

You will study different types of employment in public services and develop skills such as teamworking and problem solving.

An important part of the course is the opportunity to meet staff from the public services.

Entry requirements

No specific entry requirements but a basic fitness level, enthusiasm and self discipline are required.


The course is completed through assignments and there is no exam content. Some assignments involve assessment on practical and team tasks, others involve some individual research and presentation of your findings.

Future opportunities

Successful students can then progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Public Services.

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
