Drama and Theatre Studies *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

The course demands practical, creative and communication skills and requires candidates to write about drama and to develop powers of analysis to become informed critics, designers, directors and performers. Students should be interested in visiting the theatre and studying the theory that underpins the practical.

Students will be expected to see a minimum of four live performances in 6-1 and a minimum of one in 6-2.

Course content

AS Level
Unit 1 Exploration of Drama and Theatre: Internally assessed in the autumn term. Exploration of two contrasting plays. Evaluation of a live theatre performance. Coursework – Exploration Notes

Unit 2 Theatre in Text and Performance: Externally assessed in the spring term. Performance to an audience of a complete play. Performance of either a monologue or a duologue.

A2 Level
Unit 3 Exploration of a Dramatic Performance: Internally assessed in the autumn term. The creation of an original piece of theatre. Coursework – supporting written evidence documents.

Unit 4
Theatre Text in Context: 2 hours and 30 minutes written paper.

Entry requirements

Anyone considering taking this course should be curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating their views through drama. They should be interested in acting, writing or in the visual and technical side of theatre and wish to develop their skills in some or all of these areas.


A combination of coursework, practical assessment, written examination and a live theatre review. Students are assessed both internally and externally.

Future opportunities

It is essential for students wishing to go to Drama School. Alternatively, students go on to study a variety of subjects at degree level. Career opportunities include working in the theatre in Acting, Designing or Stage Management. The A Level also supports careers including Law and Teaching.
