Science Cambridge TEC Level 2 Extended Certificate at Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College

Course description

This qualification is ideal if you are thinking of a career or employment in Science. You will gain a Level 2 qualification which will support further study in Science. You will have valuable opportunities to develop skills, gain knowledge and understanding in Science, provide progression to further study and improve your employability.

Cambridge Technicals in Science include a wide range of units which cover the subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics by researching new innovations in these areas. Your tutor will select Units to give you a strong foundation for you to progress to the workplace or to continue studying science at a higher level. You will develop practical skills as an important part of your assessment.


Course content

Units to be studied include: 

Science of the Earth 

You will understand how the Earth’s structure has evolved and is ever changing. You will understand how we use the resources that our planet has and the challenges that society faces in uses these valuable resources in a sustainable way. 

Food Production 

You will become knowledgeable about the basics science of photosynthesis and then apply this learning to important issues in Farming for now and the future. Examples of topics include food production by hydroponics and GM food. You will research topics such as “Chocolate - from bean to box”, as an example of how food gets from the field to the supermarket. 

There are no examinations on this course and all work is assessed through task work for each unit of the qualification. You will be encouraged to track your own progress as you build up your portfolio of evidence before an external moderator from the exam board visits to agree the grades for your work.

Entry requirements

This qualification is available for anyone who meets the general college entry requirements for Level 2 study or as an option for a mixed Level 2 and Level 3 programme of study.

    • 1. Leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow signs for the A590 and Barrow (33 miles).
      2. After 25 miles pass through Ulverston and then the villages of Swarthmoor and Lindal.
      3. At the third roundabout after this take the first exit, signposted Furness General Hospital and Furness Abbey.
      4. At the next roundabout take the second exit.
      5. Pass Abbey House Hotel on the left and take the first turning on the left into Rating Lane.
      6. The College is 400 yards down Rating Lane on the left hand side.
