Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Hereford Sixth Form College

Course description

This is a two-year practical course for those who have experience and are interested in the song, dance and choreography for musicals. It focuses on the development and refinement of singing and dancing skills and how they contribute to the telling of a story to an audience.

This course is equivalent to 1 A Level qualification.

Course content

You will study musical theatre from the 1920s to the modern day and recreate pieces from musicals such as Chicago, Oklahoma, West Side Story, Wicked and much more.

Units of study include:

  • Developing Movement Skills.
  • Singing skills for Actors and Dancers.
  • Musical Theatre Performance.
  • Performing to an Audience.
  • Auditions for Actors.

There are ten assignments to complete. The majority of the assignments are practical although there is some written work. As part of your assessment, you will be expected to plan, rehearse and perform aspects of musicals throughout the year. There will also be a written research project into chosen examples of the genre.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • At least a basic standard of song and dance.
  • Experience of performing in musicals.

The course will offer expert coaching in these areas.

Further information

All performances will take place in our Performing Arts centre.

Your work will be supported by a sound design technician and theatre manager with responsibility for lighting.

The Library has an extensive Performing Arts collection and one of the librarians is also a subject specialist.

You will have access to Digital Theatre Plus online archive, which contains a wide range of filmed versions of recent West End and international plays and musicals.
