Photography (Digital) at The Hertfordshire and Essex High School and Science College

Course description

AS Level: Year 12
Component: Personal Creative Enquiry (Coursework - 100%)

Term 1: Skills and Processes. A creative, skills-based introduction to a variety of digital photography processes including the use of software for editing purposes.

Terms 2 and 3: Personal Journals. Students will embark on an in-depth personal project. This will be a creative, theme-based exploration, relating to an area of personal interest. Students produce a final outcome/s in response to their exploration.

A Level: 2 Year Linear
Component 1: Personal Investigation (Coursework - 60%) consisting of two integrated parts:

  • A major in-depth personal project. This will be a creative, theme based exploration relating to an area of personal interest. Students will also produce a final outcome/s in response to their exploration.
  • An extended written element of at least 1000 words, which must relate to the practical work completed for the personal project.

Term 1: Skills and Processes. A creative, skills-based, introduction to a variety of digital photography processes including the use of software for editing purposes.

Terms 2 and 3: Personal Projects. Students develop their own themes and ideas for a sustained, in-depth photographic exploration. Work is journal based. Students begin to compose the written element of their coursework.

Term 4: Developing Outcomes for the Personal Project/Completion of the written element.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (Exam - 40%)

Term 5: Exam Preparation. Over a number of weeks students prepare an investigative journal of supporting studies, relating to a chosen stimulus.

Term 6: Period of Sustained Focus. Investigations are resolved during a 15 hour examination, under controlled conditions.

Entry requirements

Students will have achieved, ideally, a grade B in GCSE Art & Design. Students will also be considered with a grade B, and a portfolio based interview, in a related subject such as Film & Media or Graphic Design.
