Food and Beverage Service Apprenticeship at CWT Chamber Training

Course description

The hospitality and catering industry employs over 2 million people and is constantly changing, providing food and drink services in a whole range of settings from hotels to pubs, restaurants, conference services and other outlets. By gaining a Diploma you can set yourself aside from the rest, enhance your employability, career prospects and skills.

An Apprenticeship in Food and Beverage Services offers the chance to gain valuable experience in the work place, whilst studying for qualifications that are relevant to your job role. You will be paid a salary and enjoy the perks of working life. We have access to a range of great jobs with employers who offer structured and supported learning. You will have an individually designed learning plan which will build on your existing skills. A dedicated Training Advisor will work with you throughout your Apprenticeship to support and guide you as you progress.



Course content

Throughout your Apprenticeship you will be required to perform a range of tasks, which could include:

  • Dealing with customers
  • Dealing with payments
  • Team work
  • Communication
  • Stock control
  • Maintaining a full range of drinks
  • Managing a cellar, bar facilities and handling stock
  • Maintaining safety and security
  • Promoting products and services to customers

The majority of your time will be spent in the work place gaining practical skills. You will learn from experienced colleagues and learn all aspects of serving food and drink. A dedicated Training Advisor will support and guide you.  Specialist workshops will be available off the job to develop your English and Maths skills.

Entry requirements

In general you will need to be friendly, approachable, helpful, smart, organised and customer focused. You will need to be prepared for hard work and varied tasks and able to work individually and as part of a team. You will also have to be flexible as you may have to work shifts including weekends and evenings, however this will depend on your job role and working environment. As an Apprentice you will be paid a training salary by your employer, which will increase as your experience and skills develop.

Although there are no entry requirements for this course, good GCSEs in English and Maths would be advantageous but whatever your grades we will advise you on the most appropriate route to take.


Apprenticeships are achieved through assessment and training. Assessment normally takes place on the job through on-the-job observation and questioning. You will produce evidence, documents from the workplace, to prove that you meet the national qualification standards. You will be appointed a Training Advisor who will work with you throughout your Apprenticeship. The Training Advisor will test your knowledge; understanding and work-based performance to make sure that you can work effectively in your chosen career.

When you start an Apprenticeship, CWT Chamber Training will help you to identify the correct course and level, identify what you already know, analyse what you need to learn and agree an individual plan of learning based on your needs.

Typically you will undertake a mixture of training in the workplace as well as attending CWT Chamber Training's training facility for additional learning.

Financial information

Apprenticeships for 16-18 year olds are fully funded. Your employer pays your salary and we cover all agreed training costs. For those aged 19+, there may be partial funding available. Our qualified Advisors will answer any queries you may have regarding this.

. From Level 2 there is a clear pathway of learning to enable you to progress:

  • NVQ 2 - Junior Hospitality Services Assistant
  • NVQ 3 - Restaurant Manager/ Bar Manager
  • NVQ 4 - Hotel Deputy Manager / Events Organiser
  • Foundation Degree - Hotel Manager
  • Hospitality Management Degree - Hotel Manager
