Textiles A Level at John Cabot Academy

Course description

Ever wanted to: See your work on the catwalk? Make your own fabrics? Design your own prints? Create unique fashion and interior pieces? Textiles offers you opportunities to learn and develop a variety of exciting, creative & decorative skills and techniques.

Course content

Year 1

Component 1: 

September – January: Students develop a variety of textile techniques and skills through workshop based sessions aimed at building, creativity and skills.
February– May: Students will select from number of themes, visual starting points, briefs and stimuli to develop original outcomes. It is at this point where the decision to enter for the AS level is made.

Year 2

Component 1: Personal investigation & related study continuing from independent study in year 1. Students produce two elements:
1. A portfolio of practical work,
2. A related study of continuous prose with a guided minimum of 1,000 words.
Component 2: Students will select from number of AQA set themes, and visual starting points, briefs and stimuli and produce a final outcome within 15 hours controlled assessment time (externally set assignment)

Entry requirements

Minimum grade C at GCSE in Textiles, Photography, Product Design or Art.


Coursework 60%

Externally set assignment 40%

Foundation Diploma in art & design. Fashion design, textile design, print design and interior design BA Hons courses.


Fashion designer; textile or print designer; fashion illustration; fashion or textile buyer; textile technologist; garment technologist; visual merchandiser; interior designer; home furnishing designer; independent designer; freelance designer.
