French, GERMAN & Spanish – A Level at Hitchin Girls School

Course description

Building on GCSE the AS units focus on accessible
contemporary issues under the topic headings ‘Media’,
‘Popular Culture’, ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ and ‘Family &
Relationships’. In Unit 1 (worth 70% of the AS marks)
you are required to tackle reading and listening
comprehension tasks related to these topics, and be
required to write an extended piece of target language
on a related title. The speaking test, Unit 2, (worth 30%
of the total AS marks) requires you to undertake a
“Discussion of a stimulus card” for 5 minutes and then
to engage in a general conversation on three of the
four prescribed topics. The AS qualification provides
an excellent platform for broadening and deepening
knowledge of the language and its application in
listening, reading, writing and speaking work.
Having taken the AS units, students who opt for the
full A-Level will proceed to further their grammatical
knowledge and improve their linguistic skills. At
A2 level, you will study two of five Cultural Topics,
together with the three topics of the Environment, the
Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues.
In Unit 3 (worth 35% of the A Level) you are required
