Course description

Subject specific: Explore mathematical concepts in detail Consolidate your existing mathematical knowledge Extend your mathematical knowledge in to new areas - what is a limit? What is infinity? Draw together various areas of mathematics in order to solve a single problem

Life skills: Improve you problem solving skills Produce logical reasoning to solve problems Develop sophisticated written communication skills to convey thought processes and draw conclusions AS is short for Advanced Supplementary. This is the first half of the ‘A’ Level course. It is a stepping-stone to the full ‘A’ Level qualification, although you can just take the AS on its own. Students will take two modules in Pure Mathematics and one in Statistics.

The Different Strands Pure Mathematics extends the work done at GCSE (especially algebra) into areas such as calculus. Statistics enable people to analyse and make sense of data and is widely used in the world of Business and Finance. Mechanics involves modelling physical situations mathematically in order to solve problems.

Entry requirements

Higher tier GCSE Mathematics at grade B or above.
