Media Studies A level at Nower Hill High School

Course description

The AS course combines practical hands-on experience with theory, equipping you with the skills to both analyse and create media productions.

At AS you will analyse television and newspapers for the examination unit and then produce a magazine for the coursework unit.

At A2 you will continue to develop skills in production and analysis, as well as considering some of the issues and debates in media today. You study Postmodern media for the examination unit and produce a promotional package for a film, including a video trailer, for the coursework unit.

A2:

  • Unit G324 Advanced Portfolio in Media
  • Unit G325 Examination

Entry requirements

You are not required to have studied Media Studies in advance, but if you studied Media Studies as a GCSE subject you must have achieved Grade C or above.

Assessment

  • Exams 50% (25% of total, 50% of Year)
  • Coursework 50% (25% of total, 50% of Year)

Future opportunities

A2 Media, practical or theoretical media studies courses at university and careers which may include film, television, advertising or new media industries.

What equipment or materials will I need?

At home you will need access to a DVD recorder and television. It would be beneficial to own a DSLR camera and have access to Adobe Photoshop for AS Level.
