Applied Science (Pre-Access to Nursing) (Level 2) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This qualification is intended for you if you have no formal qualifications and need to develop your skills and knowledge before progressing onto a Level 3 Access to Nursing diploma and you are returning to learning after a break from education.

Course content

You will undertake a Level 2 BTEC Science course plus a GCSE in English and a Functional Skills qualification in Maths. Units include principles of Science, Biology and our Environment, Scientific Skills, and the Living Body.

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-D including English Language and Maths*
  • A relevant Level 1 qualification including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grade A*-D

*If you do not have GCSE Maths at A*-D, we may accept a Grade E in addition to your 4 GCSEs at A*-D. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

This course is for adults aged 19+.


Assessment is through a combination of GCSE examinations and achieving the Level 2 Science certificate.

  • Access to Engineering

Grade C in GCSE and a minimum merit overall in the BTEC Science is required to progress onto the above Access courses.

  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Science

Further information

You will be expected to wear low heeled, closed toe shoes, laboratory coats and eye goggles whilst working in the laboratories.

To support your application you will need to provide a handwritten personal statement (one side of A4 paper).
