Course description

We will follow the AQA English Literature B specification.

At AS Level: Unit 1 will introduce students to the central position of narrative and the ways in which literary texts work. Four texts need to be studied; a selection of poetry by two poets; W H Auden and Robert Browning and two novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

Unit 2 at AS introduces students to aspects of the tragic genre; you will write two coursework essays, one on Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare and one on Educating Rita by Willy Russell.

The coursework at AS level gives the students the opportunity to complete a re-creative task as well as a more traditional analytical essay. Here the students are expected to write in the style of an author they have studied. A commentary should also be submitted by the student explaining their literary choices.
