Advanced Apprenticeship - IT Application Specialist Level 3 Diploma at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

This Apprenticeship offers the opportunity to develop excellent IT user skills that will give a good foundation for any type of role that includes dealing with computers in any type of industry. Your work will include a range of higher level IT user activities which will enable you to select units relevant to your role, for example, complex word processing, spreadsheets, databases, creating a web site, creating flyers and brocures to name a few. A person with good IT skills is essential in most business.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who is aged 16 and over looking to start or develop a career in IT. The diversity of the qualification means, you may choose to use this course to access employment in a specific area that you wish to specialise. On the Advanced Level Apprenticeship you could work as a Website manager, planning and contributing to designing websites; creating multimedia content for websites; and working with IT professionals to build new sites, or you may work as  IT Application helpdesk support, an IT Supervisor or website manager.

Course content

The advanced apprenticeship is made up of the following components:

  • Diploma for IT Application Specialist (QCF) - Level 3
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Functional Skills English, Maths and ICT Level 2
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. You need to be in a role that requires you to use IT as a main part function (but not necessarily solely)  of your work. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.


The range of optional units available within this qualification will allow you to tailor the qualification to your specific needs, taking into account your current levels of competence and work role. Training is delivered in the workplace and an assessor will monitor your progress and conduct assessments in the workplace.

Tutor taught sessions in the Microsoft IT Academy may also be included in your training plan, following a skills scan in the workplace. The deliver model also utilises an electronic portfolio to increase assessor accessibility for learners.

Financial information

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/ £350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.


Future opportunities

After completing the Advanced Apprenticeship some people choose to go to university to undertake a foundation degree or an undergraduate degree in a related subject area.

Following successful completion of the framework, successful apprentices will be able to continue to complete Level 4 or 5 programmes. Often candidates with qualifications in this area will naturally move into management and supervisory roles with the opportunity to do some further training.
