Mathematics AS Level and A Level at Mayflower High School

Course description

The course is intended to encourage students to develop their understanding of Mathematics. This is a challenging course and requires dedication and hard work to ensure success. By acquiring appropriate mathematical skills they learn to appreciate Mathematics as a logical and coherent subject, developing their ability to think clearly, work carefully and communicate ideas successfully.


Course content

What will I study at AS Level?

Two areas of Mathematics are studied:

Pure Mathematics (2 modules) covering the backbone of higher level mathematics with topics such as indices and proportionality, polynomials, functions, trigonometry, graphs and geometry;

Statistics (1 module) covering topics such as probability, permutations and combinations, correlation, regression, expectation and measures of dispersion and location.

What will I study at A Level?

Two areas of mathematics are studied:

Pure Mathematics (2 modules) covering topics such as trigonometry, differentiation, integration, introducing exponential and natural logarithms, 3D vectors mathematical and rational functions;

Mechanics (1 module) covering topics such as the study of forces in equilibrium, Newton’s laws of motion and motion of impacting bodies.

CAPS 40 plus Grade B in GCSE Mathematics
