BTEC National Extended Diploma in Art & Design at Altrincham College

Course description

This is a highly practical course that offers each student the opportunity to develop an exciting and very personalised portfolio of work whist still experimenting and experiencing skills in areas ranging from Fine Art and 3D to Textiles and Graphics Students will study a range of core subjects relevant to Art and Design, including visual studies, drawing, design and sculpture, photography, printmaking and contextual studies. Students will also be introduced to specialist subject areas such as Fine Art, Graphics and Fashion and Textiles. In Year 13 students may wish to select one of these areas to specialise in.

Course content

7 Mandatory units:

Visual Recording and Communication

Critical and Contextual Studies in Art & Design

The Creative Process

Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art & Design

Developing an Art and Design Portfolio

Managing a Client Brief

Developing and Realising Creative Intentions

4 Optional Units:

Fine Art Materials Techniques and Processes, Location Photography, Painting and Printmaking

Entry requirements

Five or more GCSE A*- C grades including English Language and Maths and a strong portfolio of work. Grade C GCSE in Art and Design, Graphics or Textiles if completed.

Assessment

This is a coursework based qualification so there is no exam. Units will be assessed through an ongoing-process throughtout the 2 years so that students are fully aware of their own achievements and targets.

This course is the equivalent to 3 A Levels

Future opportunities

Students can use this qualification to progress to university to study a Higher Education Foundation Degree, Higher National Diploma or other professional development programme. Some may enter a specialist area of employment.
