Financial Studies (ifs Level 3) at New College Swindon

Course description

Do I have the right bank account?  How do I pay for my first car?  Can I ever afford a house - how do I choose the right mortgage?  Should I worry about inflation and interest rates?  Why do I get charged when I take my own money from an ATM?  How will I manage my money at university?

If you have asked yourself any of these practical financial questions and want to learn how to make confident decisions about your finances, then these are the courses for you!

The CeFS and DipFS are Level 3 (Advanced) courses, recognised by universities, and ‘worth’ the same number of UCAS points as AS and A Levels. NB The Certificate is equivalent to a full Level 3 qualification.

Course content

The Certificate has two units:

Unit 1 Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term.

Unit 2  Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term.

The Diploma in Year 2 has a further two units.  You will learn in the usual taught classes, but with some supported self-study using the online materials available from ifs – see Facilities.

Entry requirements

You must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C, including English Language and Maths (or equivalent).  You should have a keen interest in improving your financial awareness and capability, and an interest in current affairs.

You must pass the CeFS in Year 1 before starting the DipFS.

Assessment

There are two exams for each course.  For the CeFS the assessment is:

Unit 1 Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term.

Unit 2  Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term.

Both Units are examined by multiple choice questions and a pre-release case study essay.

Future opportunities

They lead more directly to a career in Financial Services than some business courses.  Don’t forget, this is Swindon’s largest industry sector employer – think Nationwide, Zurich etc.

They will help you decide if a job in insurance or banking, or as a Financial Advisor, is for you.

You will make better-informed choices about your own finances, and understand how financial services products can help you achieve your personal aspirations – and you can help your family and friends as well!
