Business - Level 3 Extended Diploma (Full-Time) at Newcastle College

Course description

This qualification is ideal for those who want to work in a business environment whether it is working in a general office, local government such as schools or hospitals or whether you wish to work in a department store or hotel.

Every type of business environment requires the ability to be organised, use office equipment, work with others, deal with customers, answer the telephone, write letters or complete any other document required by a business and much more!

This course is ideal to gain the practical skills and knowledge to enter into the world of work and equip you for the challenges ahead.

Upon completion of the units you will receive a full level 3 Extended Diploma awarded by Pearson (Edexcel) who is a nationally recognised awarding body.

Course content

The course is delivered by staff who are highly experienced in the Business sector and will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to enter into the world of work and equip you for the challenges ahead.

People who work in the Business sector need a range of practical and academic skills. We will assist you to develop these skills and knowledge so that you can progress to the career of your choice in the future.

There are four optional pathways:

  • Finance
  • Marketing & Events Management
  • Retail or IT.

You will learn about:

  • Accountancy
  • Banking systems
  • Payroll
  • Balancing the money (Finance pathway)
  • Promoting products
  • Doing market research
  • Internet marketing
  • Setting up events (Marketing & Events Management pathway)
  • Working in a shop
  • Stock control
  • Fashion retailing
  • Food retailing (Retail pathway)
  • Communicating via the internet
  • Website design
  • Online systems for business
  • Internet marketing (IT pathway).

All pathways will also cover human resources and general management skills.

You will develop skills in:

  • stock taking
  • advertising for staff
  • hiring staff
  • employment law
  • customer service
  • finances
  • marketing and how to work with others
  • using the internet
  • managing people.

You will practice these skills through a variety of "hands on" tasks such as running a Christmas market, marketing an promotional event and setting up mobile shops. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills within the community through fund raising events and volunteering opportunities.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSE’s at Grade C or above, including English and Maths or Level 2 at Merit level including English and Maths GCSE at Grade C or above.

You will need to have completed the 90 credit diploma in Business prior to this course.

If English is not your first language you will also need an IELTS score of 5.0 or above.

Assessment

You will be assessed through written work, observations and simulated tasks within class as well as the projects you participate in outside of the classroom environment.

There are no examinations.

Future opportunities

You can progress into Higher Education or employment within a shop, an office or another Business environment.
