Photography A level at City and Islington College

Course description

As a result of camera-phones, more photographs will be taken this year alone than have been taken in all of history. But what makes a good photo?  And do you have what it takes to be a good photographer? This fun and inspiring course introduces you to the theory and history of photography, and allows you to pit your own work against the greats.

Course content

The emphasis on this course is on developing a sense of what makes an effective image and understanding the historical development of the photograph, its impact on society and our understanding of ourselves. You will need to be able to research and write coherent analyses and demonstrate consideration and imagination in your own work.

Entry requirements

  • You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
  • You must have an enthusiasm for photography, a curiosity about the visual world, and a desire to represent it in various and imaginative ways. You should be prepared to pose for other students and generally cooperate in the taking of images.

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

Assessment is by portfolio and end of year exams.
