Business and Management (Pre-U) at Norton Hill School and Midsomer Norton Sixth Form

Course description

Students who will enjoy this course will have a clear interest in the world around them; they will be curious about the causes and effects of the global financial crisis & how businesses have responded to this and other challenges in the global world of business.

The course will blend academic rigour and the development of practical skills. Students will investigate key strategic decisions that are made by small, medium and large enterprises in the face of new economic and challenges and opportunities.

Furthermore, students will also generate a thorough understanding of the fundamental divisions within most businesses. Students will also undertake a personal investigation into a chosen area of interest, which will involve working closely with a local business. This personal investigation represents 25% of the final grade.

Course content

Year 12 The Business Environment Operations and Project Management People in Organisations

Year 13 Finance and Accounting Marketing Personal Investigation

Topics include:

China & India as emerging economic powers

The importance of Corporate social responsibility

Driving efficiency, for instance, by means of improved waste management or via off-shoring

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE English Language or Business and a grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Students studying Pre-U Business & Management will have a clear desire to pursue a degree course at university
