Business (GCSE) at New College Swindon

Course description

On this subject you learn the theories and techniques that are ides to make decisions in business organisations.

Making decisions is crucial, and knowledge of the techniques you learn in this subject is of great benefit to management decision-making. 

You will study across the functional areas of a business to include Finance, marketing and Operations Management.

Course content

Two units are examination based, there is one controlled assessment in the classroom.  We use Edexcel as the examination board.

The assessment follows the GCSE modular pattern:

Unit 1: Introduction to Small Business – External Examination

Unit 2: introduction to Small Business – Controlled Examination

Unit 3: Building a Business – External Examination.

Unit tests are in the form of case studies, multiple choice and stimulus-response questions.  The course is taught by two tutors.

Entry requirements

You should have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade D or above including English and Maths, this does not need to include a Business related subject.  An interest in current affairs is important.

Future opportunities

GCSE Business studies is a very valuable qualification for any student aiming to continue studying at a further level, or for those thinking of a career in accounting, banking, finance, personnel, retail management or general administration.  It combines well with most other subjects such as Maths, languages, Accounting and IT.
