Course description

The course is designed to provide the opportunity for students to study and develop their knowledge and skills in the following topics:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport
  • Analyse and evaluate the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport
  • Demonstrate and apply relevant skills and techniques in physical activity and sport
  • Analyse and evaluate performance

Component 1Scientific Principles of Physical Education

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Exercise physiology
  • Biomechanics

Component 2Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education

  • Skill acquisition
  • Sport psychology
  • Sport and society

Component 3Practical Performance

  • Skills during activities as a player/performer

OR

  • Skills during activities as a coach

Component 4Performance Analysis

  • Students producing a Performance Analysis in their chosen role
  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Exercise physiology
  • Biomechanics
  • Skill acquisition
  • Sport psychology

Entry requirements

Average GCSE score of 5.20 or higher. Grade C in English, Maths, Science or retake these subjects at College. A-C grade in GCSE PE is preferred but not essential.

Assessment

Awarding Body – Edexcel

1 year AS – 2 exams 40% (105 minutes) and 30% (75 minutes)

Coursework – Practical Performance 15%

                     Performance Analysis 15%

2 year A2 – 2 exams 40% (150 minutes) and 30% (120 minutes)

Coursework – Practical Performance 15%

                     Performance Analysis 15%

Future opportunities

Many of our students progress from this course into a wide range of different industries, including physiotherapy, sports therapy, teaching, sports coaching, leisure management and sports development.
