Chemistry A Level (OCR) at The High School for Girls
The course aims to develop the students’ interest in, and enthusiasm for, Chemistry. We enable students to build on their knowledge from GCSE and to develop an understanding of the different areas of Chemistry and how they relate to each other. Chemistry is a practical subject and many of the key ideas are reinforced through experiments. There is no practical examination, instead practical skills are assessed during short controlled activities throughout the course. There are some mathematical requirements associated with the course, but a good grade in Mathematics GCSE is sufficient to cope with the demands of the course – you will need a calculator!
Modules include: Breadth in Chemistry; Depth in Chemistry; periodic table; synthesis and analytical Chemistry; unified Chemistry.
Students should have achieved Grade As in Core and Additional Science or Grade A in Chemistry. Modular results may be considered in exceptional cases. Chemistry is a mathematical subject and students must have a good grade in Mathematics GCSE and will be expected to use a calculator regularly.
