IT BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at Wyedean School and Sixth Form Centre
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Information Technology is a qualification equivalent in size to one A Level.
It is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT.
Learners will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.
You will learn to master a number of applications some of which will be new to you, including:
- MS Office
- MS Project Manager
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Flash
- Adobe Dreamweaver
- A ‘C’ or better in GCSE ICT or equivalent level 2 qualification
- A strong interest in ICT and desire to study the subject at A level.
- You should also have an interest in developing the knowledge and skills you need to be a competent and informed ICT user.
There are 4 units to study over two years.
Two of the units are external assessment and two are internal coursework based assessments.
Of the two external assessments one is completed in a controlled assessment environment in the classroom and the other is a formal written exam.
Therefore this qualification will suit those students that do not enjoy formal end of year exams.
When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications, the qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology related skills and knowledge may be advantageous.
The qualification supports entry to, for example:
- BA (Hons) in Computer Arts
- BSc (Hons) in Fashion Buying Management
- BSc (Hons) in Software Development for Animation
- BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance.
The qualification, when studied with other Level 3 qualifications, is aimed at progression to higher education but also enables leaners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entry-level roles such as a social media specialist, web/content developer, or business analyst.
