Course description

If you are interested in progressing into the automotive maintenance and repair profession, this is the course for you. It involves attending at our Castleford Campus with its state-of-the-art motor vehicle workshops for about 3 days per week.

Course content

What you will study

You will study a variety of units including:
Engine Mechanical. Ignition system & principles. Lubrication systems & Principles, cooling systems & principles. Hybrid vehicle operation.
Braking system principles working out efficiency
Hydraulic and electrical power steering
Suspension systems principles
faults and diagnosis and identifying causes of wear.
Vehicle inspection and compare against manufacturers specification
Electrical components and formula

 

How you will learn

The course is a fairly even split between classroom based theory lessons and practical workshops. You will use online learning material.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-D (new grade 9-3)
OR
A Level 1 qualification in Motor Vehicle maintenance

Assessment

You will be assessed on your practical skills, which must meet industry standards.
Each unit will have an end of phase exam, which has a pass mark of 60%
 

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course.

Any re-sit examination will incur a cost. Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.


      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
