Course content

'How are films and video games regulated? What makes a film successful? How are TV dramas constructed? How do you take professional photographs? Media studies answers these questions and many more. With Manchester evolving into the media capital of the North, Media Studies will equip you not only with knowledge about how the industry functions but also how to recreate many of the influential products we see around us on a daily basis such as magazines, film trailers, TV dramas, posters and websites – all of which will give you an excellent groundingto a career in an industry that is now on our doorstep. Media studies students have gone onto Higher Education studying media production, English, journalism, public relations, photography, sociology, psychology, teaching or simply taken media studies to the next level. Media Studies encompasses so many fields and over the two year programme you will get to experience all different sides of this dynamic and ever changing industry. You will study: music magazine production; website design; the film industry, and TV drama analysis. In year 2 your knowledge and production skills are broadened and you will experience: film trailer and poster production; film and videogame regulation; blogging and reflective Media Studies.

Future opportunities

'Students may progress onto University to study the subject at a higher level. After University past students have worked for the Cornerhouse, marketing department, become Teachers and Journalists.
