Health and Social Care - Single Vocational A Level (BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate) at Bolton Sixth Form College

Course description

Do you care? Do you want to make a difference to people’s lives? Then this course will enable you to develop both the knowledge and the practical skills required for working in the health or social care sectors. It will provide transferable knowledge and skills that prepare you for progression to university. Some of the transferable skills that are valued include:

  • Ability to learn independently
  • Ability to research actively and methodically
  • Ability to give presentations and be an active group member.

Course content

This course is for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector and will provide an introduction to this sector.

The content of the qualification incorporates topics relevant across the health and social care sector and is a combination of external examinations and coursework:,

  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
  • Sociological Perspectives
  • Psychological Perspectives
  • Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs
  • Physiological Disorders and their Care

Entry requirements

Students will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 6 and three GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language and Mathematics at grade 4. This course may be taken alongside A Level courses and may be more suited to learners with a strong profile of prior attainment in vocational studies.

Financial information

No course fees are applicable for 16-18 year old learners who meet funding regulations.

Future opportunities

This will enable you to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of programmes in the health and social care sector. The diverse range of skills developed on the course equips you for a wide range of careers. Former students have progressed into nursing, social work, counselling, teaching, midwifery and mental health.Each unit is applied to working in a range of care settings, ensuring you have a broad skill set to underpin work in health care. As a result the course will prepare you well for studies in health or social care. You will work both as an individual and in groups, and will develop confidence in your own ability to communicate in a variety of situations, preparing you for your future career.
