Sociology AS and A Level at Coleg y Cymoedd

Course description

This subject is part of the full time A level Programme. To apply for this subject you need to apply for the A Level or Combined Programme A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.

This course will introduce you to points of view on society, learning that there is no absolute right or wrong in sociology because so much of what we investigate is open to interpretation.

By studying Sociology you will learn to think critically and independently about society and your place in it, gain the tools to think for yourself and develop a critical and informed understanding of the world around you. You may even gain knowledge and skills that will help you take control of your life!

Course content

For the AS - You will gain an understanding of the shaping of individual identity and the importance of social behaviour and social structure and the significance of social change and how individuals acquire their culture. In optional topics you will gain a deeper understanding of how structures such as religion and youth/culture affect societies and individuals.

You will learn about the strengths and limitations of different research methods used by sociologists.

For A2 you will study a topic on Understanding Power and Control as well as one on Understanding Social Divisions.

You will learn how to demonstrate and apply your understanding of the topics covered at AS level and A level.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English Language. You do not need to have studied Sociology at GCSE.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.


You will be assessed by 100% examination.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course many learners apply to and are offered places at university.
