Course description

Are you interested in Art and Design? Do you want the opportuntiy to develop your own ideas and abilities? Do you like to work in a relaxed, friendly andd creative atmosphere? The atmosphere in both studios is alive with a diversity of ideas and methods of work. Many students gravitate towards the art studios in their own time to continue their work in a supportive, highly creative and happy environment.

The Edexcel art and design fine art course is a fast paced and exciting course which will encourage you to use own experiences, ideas and interests to create a portfolio of work using a range of disciplines.

Course content

Work produced for this specification will demonstrate the use of formal elements and creative skills, and give visual form to individual thoughts, feelings, observations and ideas. You will show evidence of trying to extend your own and others’ ways of seeing the world. You will use the visual language of the subject sensitively and thoughtfully to support your intentions.

You will be expected to develop knowledge and understanding of painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture and alternative media.

The course comprises of:

Component 1- a personal investigation worth 60% of your final grade. This includes a written piece of work of between 1000-5000 words.

Component 2- externally set assignment worth 40% of your final grade.

Entry requirements

It is a requirement that students have achieved a grade 5 in GCSE Art.

Future opportunities

An important aspect of the course is planned visits to galleries and museums and first hand experiences outside the classroom to broaden your own visual language skills and understanding. Visits may be arranged by the art department but these must be supplemented with personal visits and further research. The course is designed to allow you creative ownership and encourage freedom to explore unfamiliar materials, techniques and processes. This subject offers you the opportunity to produce independent creative solutions and strengthen your understanding.

The course provides a beneficial experience for all who wish to pursue a career in art, or follow an art based college and university course. You could take this fine art course with other advanced level courses such as photography and media to prepare for higher education in areas of art and design. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an architect, interior or fashion designer, teacher, advertising, computer graphics or gaming, to name but a few. However, it also combines well with less creative A levels.
