Popular Music Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

Delivered in partnership with Sage Gateshead.

Study music with us and you’ll be surrounded by internationally acclaimed artists, world class music practitioners, a skilled technical team and expert teachers.

Course content

You will develop 5 key areas vital to your musical career:

  • Performance
  • Creativity
  • Musicianship
  • Technology
  • Enterprise.

You’ll benefit from instrumental lessons every week, delivered by world-class music practitioners from Sage Gateshead and take part in live venue performance workshops in Sage Gateshead or Gateshead Old Town Hall every week and perform gigs in professional cultural venues at least three times a year.

You’ll study graded music theory exams and have the opportunity to study graded instrumental Syllabus, (RGT, LCM and Rock School.)

You’ll also benefit from a discounted tickets policy for a selection of concerts and additional performance opportunities as part of Sage Gateshead’s learning and participation concert series.

Your time will be split between the Sage Gateshead on Gateshead Quays and Gateshead College’s Baltic Campus, so you’ll be able to take advantage of two venues with world class facilities.

Entry requirements

  • This course is Level 3 - you will need to have the equivalent of at least four GCSEs at grade C or above - preferably including English and maths.
  • For vocational programmes, it would help to have a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience.
  • You'll need to have some musical ability on your chosen instrument. The application process includes an audition.

Assessment

You'll be assessed using a variety of methods, including performance assessment, personal journals, assignments, tests and others.

The exact nature of the evidence you'll need to provide will depend on the subject material you're covering.

Future opportunities

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
