Music Practitioner Level 2 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

The Level 2 Music Practitioner course is for students who want to take their interest and passion for music to the next level by developing their skills in performance, technology, business or composition. For non-instrumentalists, the technology and business pathways provide a route towards working in the pop music industry. The aim of the various pathways is to equip learners with various music industry relevant skills so students can progress in a variety of ways.

Course content

PERFORMANCE Learners will: • perform effectively on their instrument/voice • rehearse and display musicianship skills • initiate and develop repertoire • rehearse effectively and perform music live • understand contextual issues relating to music style, audience and the music industry • understand relevant aspects of music technology

TECHNOLOGY Learners will demonstrate: • sound recording skills • mixing and mastering skills • sequencing and production skills • live sound skills • radio programming skills • video production skills • understanding of contextual issues relating to music technology

BUSINESS Learners will demonstrate: • sound business and financial skills • marketing skills • understanding of music contracts • media communication skills • freelance practice • artist management and artist representation skills • event management skills

All LMC students will receive tutorial support and take a programme of Functional Skills. 

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-D including English or maths OR a Level 1 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

Assessment

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including practical performance, coursework, projects and assignments. 

Financial information

Students may be required to pay towards trips and special events. Students will need to provide and maintain their own musical instruments. For vocalists, this means providing your own microphone. Students will need to provide their own headphones for personal use, preferably full size closed-back.

Future opportunities

The course leads onto the Rockschool Music Practitioner Level 3 Extended Diploma and is designed to offer you a choice of routes into higher education or employment. 

Further information

On completion of this course you will receive Rockschool Music Practitioner Level 2 Diploma in Music.

You will be expected to undertake regular home study on this course, particularly instrumental study.
