Five options are available for you to select from.
 
All courses can lead to higher education and careers in sport psychology, fitness and sport therapy, sport and exercise science, physical education teaching and other related sports careers / courses.

Course content

Five options are available for you to select from.

Option 1 – BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport


Units include –
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport.
The Physiology of Fitness.
Assessing Risk in Sport.
Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise.

BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport – equates to 1 AS – this can be converted to a full A Level within the second year by studying the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma


Option 2 – BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 1 A Level)
Units Include –
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport.
The Physiology of Fitness.
Assessing Risk in Sport.
Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise.
Practical Team Sport.
Psychology for Sport.
Sports Coaching.

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport – equates to 1 A Level equivalent – this can be converted to 2 A Level equivalents within the second year by studying the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport.

Option 3 – BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) (equivalent to 2 A Levels)
Units include –
Fitness Training and Programming.
Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport.
Sports Nutrition.
Outdoor Adventurous Activities.
The Athlete’s Lifestyle.
Work Experience in Sport.

Option 4 – BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 1.5 A Levels)
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport.
The Physiology of Fitness.
Assessing Risk in Sport.
Fitness Training & Programming.
Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise.
Practical Team Sport.
Psychology for Sport.
Sports Coaching.
Physical Education & the Care of Children & Young People.
Sport & Exercise Massage.

BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport – equates to 1.5 A Level equivalents – this can be converted to 3 A Level equivalents within the second year by studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport.

Option 5 – BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) (equivalent to 3 A Levels)
Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport.
Sports Nutrition.
Outdoor Adventurous Activities.
The Athlete’s Lifestyle.
Work Experience in Sport.
Organising Sports Events.
Sports Injuries.
Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport.
Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise.

Study Visits
Possible outdoor pursuit day trips – Sheffield indoor climbing walls, Manvers Waterfront, Peak District – activities could include – indoor & outdoor climbing & abseiling, hill walking, caving, weaselling, kayaking, canoeing.

Possible visits to Universities (SHU &/or LMU).

Possible Sports Science trip to St. George’s Park – home of England FA.

Possible Sports Leading & Sports Coaching within local primary and secondary schools.

Work placement within a relevant sporting organisation.

 

Additional non-compulsory enrichment trips:

New York (USA) Football Tour – residential – includes up to 5 games.
Outdoor Pursuits Summer Camp – residential – includes activities such as rock climbing, mountain walking, canyoning and wild camping.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards - includes expeditions.
 

Entry requirements

Grade 3 in Maths.

Assessment

All units assessed through portfolio assignments, which are set & marked by your teachers.

The course is highly practical so you will be expected to perform, coach & officiate in a variety of sports as well as participate in a number of fitness sessions.

Financial information

Cost of indoor climbing walls, Manvers Water Front, Peak District – approximately £40.

    • The College is situated on Moorgate in Rotherham, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Rotherham.  Buses leave the central Rotherham Interchange every 10 minutes and the journey takes approx. 5 minutes. 

      We also run dedicated bus services to ease your journey to and from College.  See www.thomroth.ac.uk for details and route information. 

      The College also has on-site permit parking for students, with priority given to students with the greatest distance to travel.
