Physical Education AS (Level 3) at Charles Darwin School

Course description

A Level Physical Education is an ideal choice for students wishing to pursue a career in physiotherapy, teaching physical education, sports coaching, fitness training instruction and sports/leisure centre management. It should be chosen by students wishing to take A2 Physical Education and go on to higher education courses in physiotherapy, sports science and physical education teaching. The AS course will cover opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy active lifestyle; analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted role. Students will perform, analyse and evaluate the execution of core skills/techniques in isolation and in structured practice. The course will examine how exercise physiology can optimise performance and how the application of psychological knowledge can optimise performance. Contemporary influences in sport and their impact on the performer will be studied. Finally, students perform, analyse and evaluate their own performance, identify weaknesses and suggest causes and appropriate corrective measures. A reasonably good level of fitness will be advantageous though not essential as this can be developed during the course.

Entry requirements

A minimum of B grade in GCSE Physical education and C in science, English and mathematics. A strong interest in sport and physical education is essential

Future opportunities

On completion of the course students may choose to continue their study of physical education and sport by entering higher education or go directly into employmentA level physical education is well suited to those students who performed to a high standard in GCSE physical education. Students should discuss their suitability for the course with the PE department staff.

The course will not only provide students with a qualification, it will develop their self-confidence, inter-personal skills, sports performance, knowledge of sport, physical fitness and observation/analysis skills.
