Geography A Level at Brimsham Green School

Course description

Geography is not only contemporary and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today!

Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. So many of the world's current issues – at a global scale and locally boil down to geography, and need the geographers of the future to help us understand them. This course offers the opportunity to study a range of physical, human and environmental topics.

In Year 12 we will study the dynamic topics of ‘Coastal Landscapes and Systems’ and ‘Hazards’. In addition to this a Geographical Investigation is carried out based on 4 days of fieldwork. The human/physical balance is then maintained by studying ‘Global Systems and Global Governance’.

In Year 13, we add ‘Water and Carbon Cycles’* to the Physical Geography already studied, whilst ‘Changing Places’* and ‘Population and the Environment’* complete the Human Geography content.

Future opportunities

Choosing geography at A-Level can open the doors to a university degree and is considered to be a leading ‘facilitating subject’ and is widely recognised for its academic ‘robustness.’ This subject can equally be valuable for the world of work.

Geographers are widely considered to be highly employable due to their skills in planning, research, report writing, working in a team, using new technologies and communication skills – and much more!

This will be an A-level to consider if you are looking at any career in the civil service, engineering, environmental work, social work, the police force, teaching or as an aid or development officer. Geography is a subject that links well with A level science subjects, particularly Biology and Chemistry, and it is a popular subject to take with History, Sociology, Business studies, English and Mathematics.

The course will include a residential fieldtrip that will link into one of the topics covered in the syllabus and examined at the end of Year 12/13.
