Course description

Advanced  Apprenticeship

  • Performing Engineering Operations – Three units from this NVQ Diploma must be undertaken at local college either as block release for 6/8 months or day release for two years; can also be undertaken in the workplace in certain circumstances
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma – Numerous skill-specific disciplines – Undertaken in the workplace
  • Level 3 Technical Certificate – Various Subjects – Undertaken at local college on day release for two/three years
  • Level 2 Functional Skills – Application of Number, Communication, ICT usually undertaken at college alongside Technical Certificate – some could be exempt if certain GCSE’s are achieved at Grade ‘C’ or above
  • Level 2 Award in Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) – usually undertaken in the workplace

Length of the course - Between 3 and 3½ years duration Approximately

  • Performing Engineering Operations
  • Business Improvement – Techniques
  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Fabrication and Welding Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Engineering Maintenance and Installation
  • Materials Processing and Finishing
  • Electrical and Electronics Servicing
  • Engineering Technical Support 
  • Bus and Coach Engineering and Maintenance
  • The Power Industry

Who is it for?

Engineering requires you to apply maths and science principles; therefore these subjects are particularly important. The majority of employers are looking for GCSE or equivalent at Grades A*-C however some may specify at least two subjects needs to be achieved at A-Level.

Typical skills required include:

  • Able to work as a team
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Good practical skills

Entry requirements

To begin an Engineering Apprenticeship at Level 2 or 3 you will need GCSEs Grades A*-C.

Individual employers may look for specific qualifications, these are stated on each Apprenticeship Vacancy, this may include A level qualifications.


Financial information

Aged 16-18
Fully funded

Aged 19-23
Fully funded for employers with less than 1000 employees. For employers with 1000+ employees, please contact us for further details.

Aged 24 and over
Total People require employers to make a contribution towards the cost for all learners aged 24 years and over, embarking on an Apprenticeship.

Future opportunities

Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you can look at moving on to an Advanced Apprenticeship in engineering.

Following on from that you would be able to move on to Level 4 Engineering Management, Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation Degree.
