Performing Arts - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) at Wakefield College

Course description

This course is for those who wish to pursue a career in the ever expanding and increasingly popular industry of musical theatre. It is a unique course that combines a mixture of practical, vocational and academic study in the three art forms of dance, drama and singing. There will be a wide range of opportunities for you to show your work in a diverse array of live performances and chances to attend professional performances in both regional and national venues. You will be taught by industry experienced tutors alongside visiting professionals working in the West End.

Course content

You will develop skills in the three disciplines of singing, dancing and acting and learn to combine them to produce dynamic and expressive performance suitable for this genre. These skills will be underpinned by the principles of the creative process and various performance styles. You will develop the ability to work as part of an ensemble, exchanging ideas and developing work for performance.

In Year 2 the emphasis will shift to creative endeavour in which you will actively contribute to performance projects utilising skills and techniques gained throughout the course. You will be able to experiment more as an individual following your own ideas and areas of interest within Musical Theatre.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-4) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4) . This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
