ICT BTEC Level 2 Certificate at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College

Course description

This full-time, one year vocational course will give you an insight into the world of IT. This is a practical course where you will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. This course is graded at Level 1, Level 2 Pass, Level 2 Merit, Level 2 Distinction or Level 2 Distinction*.

Course content

On this course you will produce a portfolio of assignments to gain a broad understanding of a vocational sector within IT. The course is made up of a number of units. The three core units provide a general foundation, and a variety of specialist units will introduce you to particular topics in more depth.

All students will take three core units:

  • The Online World (externally assessed online)
  • Technology Systems (externally assessed online)
  • A Digital Portfolio (internally assessed coursework)

The remaining units are coursework based, internally assessed and externally verified.

Entry requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at grades D-E (including Maths and English Language at grade D or above)


The work is predominantly coursework based with internal assessment by staff, but two units are externally assessed by online tests.

Future opportunities

The course provides good preparation for employment in any area of ICT. If you achieve a Merit grade or above, and pass your English and Maths GCSE with at least a C grade, it could also enable you to progress onto advanced courses at Richard Taunton’s, such as an Extended Diploma in Business or IT.

Further information

A BTEC Extended Certificate (at Level 2 Pass or above) is equivalent to two GCSEs at grade A*- C.
