Film Studies A Level at Itchen College

Course description

If you are interested in entering the film or media industry and would like to work with professional equipment, this course is for you.

This course is for you if...

...you would like to study how films are put together and consider their wider economic, social and cultural significance.

Course content

The first year will help you find ways to analyse and discuss films you are already familiar with.

You will also have the chance to study cinema as an industry and engage in a detailed study of an area of British cinema.

You will explore the following:

  • Micro-elements of film form
  • Critical debate
  • US vs UK cinema
  • Film movement
  • Production of short films
  • The history of film

Entry requirements

Grades 9-4 in English and four or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 and A*-C.

Additional guidance is available at interview. 

Assessment

70% exam 30% coursework

Future opportunities

Many universities now offer Film Studies as a full-time course should you wish to take these studies further. This course will also provide you with the analytical and creative skills necessary to embark on a wide range of other degree courses.

Further information

You will be able to go on trips around the UK to visit media institutions and businesses. You will also be able to participate in writing and creating shows for Itchen Radio.
