Course description

The level 3 Mathematics in context course prepares students for the range of varied contexts that they are likely to encounter in vocational and academic study, future employment and life. Students will develop competence in the selection and use of mathematical methods and techniques. Develop confidence in representing and analysing authentic situations mathematically, and in applying mathematics to address related questions and issues. Students will build skills in mathematical thinking, reasoning and communication.

This course is particularly suitable for student studying: Sciences, Business, Economics or Psychology.

Course content

The content areas covered in this qualification are applications of Statistics, probability, linear programming & sequences and growth.

Entry requirements

Students need to gain a C or above at GCSE Maths.



Two externally assessed exam paper

Paper 1- Comprehension 40% of the total qualification 60 marks

Paper 2 –Application 60% of the total qualification 80 marks

A pre released source booklet will detail two real life contexts. These contexts will be assessed in the written paper, which requires students to comprehend, interpret and analyse the content in order to answer the questions.

Both papers will examine applications of Statistics, probability, linear programming & sequences and growth.

Future opportunities

This qualification provides the mathematical skills to support students progression to higher education to study subjects that `use’ mathematics including, for example, biology, business, geography, health and social care, nursing and psychology.
