Army Preparation at Nacro (Sheffield )

An exciting opportunity has arisen at nacro - a chance to try it out!! We are running, as part of our Study Programme, an Army preparation course that includes opportunities for improving fitness levels, basic skills and finding out what army life is all about.

You spend most mornings working on fitness, afternoons working on basic skills; and usually one day each week you attend an activity such as assault course (confidence course), artillery display, barracks visits, map reading, survival techniques and emergency field first aid. You will also work towards attaining functional skills qualifications in team work, using ICT, preparing and conducting a major project and, as a team, doing a final presentation.

Course content

Besides finding out more about Army life and what it can offer, you also learn things such as:

  • Basic skills - English & maths
  • Personal and social development skills - confidence building, communication, group working, interaction etc
  • Survival skills
  • Map reading
  • Presentation skills
  • Communication skills
  • Team working
  • Jobsearch skills
  • Motivation
  • The units you work on to prepare you include:

    Taking part in sport

    Developing personal confidence and self-awareness

    Work experience

    Personal career planning

    Personal budgeting and money management

    Understanding the rights and responsibilities of citizenship

    Preparing for a recruitment interview

Entry requirements

None, although due to the nature of the training youmay not be able to join this course if you have certain medical problems. The list includes things such as:

  • Eye problems (not including having to wear glasses)
  • Heart problems
  • Asthma in the last 4 years
  • Epilepsy or fits within the last 10 years
  • Diabetes
  • Eczema or Psoriasis
  • Back or joint problems
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Anorexia or Bulimia

    Any police convictions could also affect your application.

Assessment is ongoing, and you build up your own portfolio of evidence

Assessment for suitability for the Army is also ongoing, and the Sergeants running the programme with us will keep you informed of the progress you are making.

During the course you may sit the Army BARB test (on-line literacy and numeracy) and discuss your future options and preferences. You  could also be given the opportunity to do the selection tests in Scotland.

Financial information

None, and you are provided with subsidised travel pass, equipment and clothing.  There is even a free gym and subsidised canteen at our Sheffield site. 

Future opportunities

If you are suitable and interested, you could be offered an opportunity to join the Army - this would be discussed through the course.

If you do not wish to join the Army, you may wish to join one of our other vocational areas at Nacro:

  • Sport and Active Leisure
  • Catering
  • Motor Vehicle Repair
  • Retail
  • Alternatively, Connexions are on hand to offer other options should this be needed. We will also help if you:

  • wish to look for work
  • would like to go to College
  • would like to move onto further training
