History - A Level at Northallerton College

Course description

History itself is interesting and enjoyable. The topics studied, and the skills developed, offer students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding, and prepare themselves for a number of careers and higher education courses.

Entry requirements

Students should have a minimum of 5 GCSEs At-C grades. a minimum of grade 5 is required in English and maths. GCSE history is not a requirement .

Assessment

We encourage discussion and a combination of independent and collaborative leaming, and seek to develop the skills involved in dealing with complex ideas which are expressed through argument in continuous prose. At AS level, the course extends the expertise gained at GCSE; developing skills of investigation and historical explanation. At A level, skills of evaluation and analysis are developed through the consideration of controversial historical debate.

Future opportunities

The course is demanding and combines well with other arts or science subjects. Our A level historians have gone on to study history at a wide range of universities. In addition, the subject offers an excellent basis for applications to many other higher education courses, such as law, politics or the sciences.
