King Edward VI High School PE A Level Pearson (Block A) at The Stafford Partnership
The A level PE course has four primary objectives. At the end of the course students will have developed knowledge and understanding of factors that underpin sports performance and physical activity. In addition to this they must be able to apply this knowledge to a variety of setting and also analysing the effectiveness of these factors. Finally a student must be able to demonstrate and apply relevant skills in sport identifying their strengths and weaknesses.
Component 1 – Scientific Principles of PE, this unit looks at applied anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology and applied movement analysis.
Component 2 – Psychological and social principles of PE, this unit looks at skill acquisition, sports psychology and sport and society.
Component 3 – Practical Performance, this unit looks at the skills performed as a player/performer or coach.
Component 4 – Performance analysis and Personal Development Programme, this unit is two written pieces of coursework related to a sport of their choice.
The standard entry criteria to study in the sixth form is an 9-4 or A*-C in at least seven different subjects, including mathematics which would usually be at grade 4 or above (equivalent to grade C in previous years).
To study other subjects already taken at GCSE you must achieve at least a grade 5 or C grade or above in that subject.
1 x 2 hrs 30 mins written examination (40%)
1 x 2 hr written examination (30%)
Practical Sport Assessment (15%)
Coursework x 2 pieces (15%)
Students are encouraged to purchase the relevant text book.
